No Ordinary Eyes

Since his arrival in Tel Aviv two years ago, Stephane has been discovering and rediscovering the city. Inspired by the elements that surround him, armed with his camera, he walks through the city, often very early in the morning, discovering its contradictions, its complexity, its beauty. After suspending the moments with his camera, Stéphane then uses his imagination, his feelings and his artistic vision to extend these moments and give us his interpretation of the city's reality. Photographs of buildings or parts of them, of people, of landscapes, of nature, moments, combination of elements that Stéphane sees as a reflection of his perception of Tel Aviv: a city from the past, living in the present, constantly on the move towards the future. In the first series of photographs, now on show at the gallery, Stephane shows us the contrasts & contradictions of Neve Tzedek. Old & new, natural & man-made, truth & appearance, public & private, real & unreal.... He looks through the lens and presents us his reality, his vision of Tel Aviv's first Jewish neighborhood. Neve Tzedek was established in 1887, 22 years before the 1909 founding of the City of Tel Aviv, by a group of Jewish families seeking a more peaceful life outside of overpopulated Jaffa and is today of the trendiest areas in town.
